Film Independent at LACMA
I went to the screening knowing nothing about the case involved and honestly thought it was going to be a music film. It is that but quite a bit more. Pussy Riot is not only a band, it’s a full scale movement that began in Moscow and threatens to go global.
The collective’s politics are old style leftist, running counter to the Putin Regime. As for their music. It’s energetic, it’s sexy. It’s also dangerous. After an arrest for an unauthorized performance at a sacred Russian Orthodox cathedral, three of the members, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria “Masha” Alyokhina and Yekaterina “Katia” Samutsevich were sentenced to prison, with two still serving their sentences. One of them is on a hunger strike. Hey, girls just wanna’ have fun.
On HBO beginning June 10
